Information is life, how informed, the type of information, and information seeking pattern of people says a lot about them. People seek information to be aware or be knowledgeable about topics, phenomenons or personalities. There are lots of ways people do this, however Google has been the most popular search engine and most used source of open information in the long run. This platform also monitor what people look for and where the search are coming from, it usually release top search globally and also by regions/countries. In other to understand Nigerians information seeking behaviuor on Google, our analysis looked into top search in Nigeria for a whole week covering from 14th - 20th November, 2021. He discovered that Nigerians seek information on sport than other things. 53% of the top search in Nigeria is about sport followed by personalities, entertainment, news and only 2% was on education topics.
This shows that people want to know about sport (mostly international) than any of the other categories. Personality which has 20% is believed to be induced by sport, entertainment, politics and crime has those people whom Nigerians seek information about during the reviewed week was mostly sport people and artists while some are also politicians and some suspected criminals in the news. That makes our analyst to opined that, sport, entertainment and significant part of personality are pointing to the same direction. Only about 11% of the Google users seek information on news items perhaps to know more or the real truth of what they heard in the news. And only 2% seek information on education items, this suggests that most of the people using Google are not using it for educational purpose, the percentage on education is too low and rediculous.
Even on day by day comparison, sport took overall lead except on Friday where entertainment took the peddle, and became outlier on Saturday probably because of some weekend matches. Whereas education did not have any day of the week to its favour not even the working or schooling days.
Nigerians may therefore be tagged sport fanatics or sport addicted people, a condition that is believed to be diverting there attention from the realities of the nation but also the only means of happiness for them. In the FGD conducted by our analyst on youths reaction to listen to news, it was established that youths are not listening to news and will even discourage those who try to do, "what good do I want to gain from news, it always makes listeners sad" is there sayings. It is dangerous if people do not know and not willing to know what is going on around them. A country is in trouble if it's people (mostly youths) only catered for fun and plays instead of education and knowledges. Then we ask, where is the future lies?
